About Beta! Here's What You Need to Know
Hey everyone!
If you're reading this, you've probably found your way to GrandpaCAD, and I'm super excited to have you here. For those who are new, GrandpaCAD is my little project to make 3D modeling and printing accessible to everyone. No need to learn complex CAD software – just describe what you want, and our AI will try its best to build it for you.
We're currently in "beta," which is just a fancy way of saying we're still figuring things out and building this thing together. This post is all about what that means for you.
So, What's "Beta" All About?
Think of the beta phase as an early-access pass. You get to play with the latest and greatest, and in return, you help me iron out the kinks. It's a team effort!
What's Working and What's... a Work in Progress?
The core of GrandpaCAD is up and running. You can definitely create some pretty cool and complex CAD designs, make parameterized models that others can tweak, and even export multi-part models using the .3mf
format.
But, and this is a big but, it's not perfect yet. The number one goal for getting out of beta is making the AI model generations more reliable and just... better. Right now, you might need to try a few different prompts to get the result you're looking for. For a full list of what's new and what's fixed, your best bet is to check out the changelog.
Is It Free?
Yep, you can try it out for free! There's also a paid tier if you find yourself wanting to do a lot more model generations. We'll see how things go, but for now, I want to make sure everyone can give it a spin.
Stability & Limitations
- Stability: The service is pretty stable for actual printing projects. I've seen some awesome stuff come out of it already!
- File Formats: Currently, we only support
.3mf
for exports. I'd love to add more options like STL and STEP, but I want to hear from you first. What do you need? Let me know! - Model Complexity: Don't expect to design a jet engine just yet. GrandpaCAD is best for enthusiasts who want to make simpler 3D prints without the headache of traditional software.
We Need You! The Feedback Loop
Seriously, your feedback is what will make GrandpaCAD great.
- How to Report Issues: See something weird? Have a great idea? Use the
Send Feedback
button on the generation page or head over to the Contact page. - What We're Looking For: I'm especially curious to know which prompts work really well for you, and which ones... don't. This helps me fine-tune the AI.
- Response Times: Just a heads-up, I still have a full-time job, so I can't promise immediate fixes. But I do read every single piece of feedback and I'm working on this as much as I can.
Your Stuff is Safe With Us
I know it can be a bit nerve-wracking to use a beta product, so let's talk about your data.
- Your Models: Your designs are backed up and they're here to stay. Everything you create during the beta will be there for the full release.
- Your Account: Your account will carry over, no problem. You won't have to sign up again when we launch the 1.0 version.
The Road Ahead
What's next for GrandpaCAD?
- Timeline: I don't have an exact date for the 1.0 release. My focus is on quality, and I'll spend as much time as it takes to get there. There are a ton of ideas in the pipeline (you can even vote on some of them on the settings page!).
- Main Goal: The number one priority is improving the quality and reliability of the model generations. That's the big one.
- Perks for Early Users: Will early users get any special benefits or grandfathered pricing? I'll think of something! 👌
Setting Expectations
To sum it all up: GrandpaCAD is a powerful tool for creating simple 3D prints from a text prompt, but it's not magic (yet!). Expect to have some fun, create some cool stuff, but also be prepared to iterate on your prompts a bit to get the perfect model.
Thanks for being a part of this journey. I can't wait to see what you create!
If you don't have an account yet you can start by signing up.
