How the conversion works

PLY files usually come out of 3D scanners and photogrammetry pipelines. The format stores a mesh, optionally with per-vertex color.

What survives the PLY to OBJ conversion?

Geometry comes through completely: every triangle, at full precision. Materials, textures, and vertex colors are dropped, because OBJ as written here stores plain triangles only.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 300 MB and 8 million triangles work. Heavier meshes take longer rather than failing outright; if a file is unwieldy, reduce its triangle count first with the reduce tool.
