What's New at GrandpaCAD

We're always working hard to make 3D modeling easier and more fun. Here's a timeline of our latest major updates and news. Each month's update also includes a number of bugfixes and smaller improvements.

March 2026

Generation Settings

Configure your printer's build volume, part clearance, preferred mode, filament colors, and standing instructions once. Every generation respects your settings automatically. 30+ printer presets included.

Inline Color Picker

Type # in the chat to open a color picker with 24 curated colors or choose your own. Selected colors show up as highlighted hex codes you can click to change.

Multi-Color Guide

Upgraded to Gemini 3.1

GrandpaCAD now runs on Gemini 3.1, which produces significantly better geometry connectivity between parts.

Learning Hub

New hub with a video tutorial series covering your first model, CAD search, and organic mode. Plus handy cheat sheets for holes, hardware, and geometry.

Image to 3D Now Generally Available

Image to 3D is no longer an early access feature. Upload a photo, screenshot, or sketch and GrandpaCAD will use it as reference to generate your 3D model.

Free 3D Printing Tools and Calculators

We've launched 12 free tools for 3D printing: cost calculators, calibration helpers, filament references, and more. No sign-up required. Missing a tool? Let us know and we'll build it.

Choosing the Best LLM-to-CAD Engine

We've added OpenSCAD as a core modeling backend. It's much faster, more precise, and handles complex functional parts like nuts and bolts much better than before.

Open in BambuLab

For users with BambuLab printers, you can now open your generated models directly in Bambu Studio with a single click. Enable it in your settings!

Image to 3D Model

You can now upload images and have them converted to 3D models.

Faster Parameter Changes

Now up to 80% faster to change parameters.

Many minor tweaks and fixes

We have improved a lot of smaller details across the app. From making better chat UI to improving parameters display.

Gemini 3

We've integrated the Gemini 3 model. By our evaluations is by far the smartest model for 3D generation out there.

Testing Infrastructure Update

We've updated our testing infrastructure to be able to evaluate our changes in a more data driven way.

GPT-5.1

We've experimented with GPT-5.1 and found it to be a much faster model than GPT-5. But this was short lived and superseded by Gemini 3 just a few days later.

Improvements Across the Board

We have made a lot of smaller improvements that when added together improve the generations drastically.

Visual Autofix Disabled

We've disabled the visual autofix feature for now. It's not ready for prime time yet.

You can now select from a list of options in the parameters editor.

Blender Backend Migration Complete

We've moved our core 3D generation from JSCAD to Blender, enabling more robust and complex models, including organic shapes, bevels, and fillets.

Visual Autofix Alpha

While generating a model AI will now continously look at the model and try to correct itself.

We are now in "beta" which means anyone can try it out.

Search is here!

Now the AI will automatically search for datasheets and dimensions of CAD parts when you ask it to generate a 3D model. If it doesn't you can always ask it to "search and generate".

Memory is here!

GrandpaCAD will now remember your requirements even throughout the longer conversations. This is supposed to work with increased context length.

Context length has been increased

Previously GrandpaCAD only sent the last message in the generation, now it will send up to 5 previous messages, meaning you can converse much more naturally.

Autofix Alpha

This should result in less models that fail to generate. Now if the model fails to generate it will autmoatically try to fix itself. If this happens the model generation might take more time.

Workspace Sharing

You can now get a public link to your workspace. All public within that workspace will be visible to anyone with the link. To demonstrate this we created a public library.

GrandpaCAD is Born!

The first version of GrandpaCAD was launched! It all started with a simple idea: making 3D modeling as easy as having a conversation. This initial prototype included the core chat interface and first workflows to making 3D AI Models. Just enough so my grandpa can experiment.
